Scar camouflage micropigmentation is a minimally invasive procedure and therefore involves breaking the skin's surface to deposit pigment. As with any procedure that penetrates the skin, there are inherent risks involved.

Infection: Anytime the skin is broken, there's a risk of infection. If the equipment isn't properly sterilised or if aftercare instructions aren't followed diligently, bacteria can enter the skin, leading to infections.

Signs of an infection include increased redness, swelling, pus, or a foul odor. It's crucial to seek medical attention if any of these symptoms appear.

Allergic Reaction: While rare, some individuals may be allergic to the pigments used in micropigmentation. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching, redness, and swelling in the micropigmented area. If you suspect an allergic reaction, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional.

Skin Irritation: Some people might experience skin irritation after the procedure. This can manifest as redness, itching, or a burning sensation. While mild irritation can be expected, if it persists or worsens, it's advisable to seek medical advice.

Granulomas: Granulomas are small, reddish bumps that can form around pigment. They occur when the body perceives the pigment particle as foreign invader and tries to "wall off" the intruders.

Poor Color Match: Achieving the perfect color match is both an art and a science. There's a risk that the pigmented area might not perfectly match the surrounding skin, leading to an uneven or artificial appearance.

Color Fading: Over time, the pigmentation can fade due to various factors like sun exposure, skin regeneration, and the body's natural metabolism of the pigments. This might necessitate touch-up sessions.

Discoloration: Factors like excess sun exposure, skin type, and the type of pigment used can lead to discoloration. 

Pigment Migration or Spreading: In very rare cases, the pigment might spread beyond the intended area, leading to a blurred or smudged appearance. This can be due to factors like skin type, technique used, or the type of scar being treated.

Following your scar camouflage micropigmentation, your practitioner will provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions. Adhering to these guidelines is paramount to ensuring the longevity and success of the procedure. By meticulously following the prescribed aftercare regimen, you not only optimise the healing process but also significantly minimise potential risks. Straight after treatment:

Avoid swimming , going in a sauna or Jacuzzi or a gym session after your treatment.

After 3 days - 1 week a light amount of vasseline can be applied as a barrier and then continue as normal.

Additional procedures cannot be undertaken until the area has completely healed. We suggest a 4/6 week healing time before further work is undertaken. Once the area has completely healed (3-7 days) consider using a sunblock to prevent the pigment colour fading.

Healing consists of three phases:

Heal:

The body’s natural defences will create a fine scab to protect the area whilst healing. Peel: After a few days the scab will slough away. Picking at the treated area as it heals will result in pigment loss.

Fade:

After the fine scabbing has sloughed away you will see a lighter hue to the implanted colour which is more realistic. After 4/6 weeks the colour will appear to take on a new strength.

GENERAL ADVICE

The morning after treatment you may shower. It is suggested you shower with your back to the water jets to avoid the water directly hitting the treated area.

Use gauze to blot dry the treated area. If you wish to bathe then please avoid soaking in the bath water or using any bath products.

Use gauze to blot dry. If you have a dressing covering the treated area please remove it as soon as possible when you get home.

If you find any lymphatic fluid or blood weeping gently clean the area with saline/cool boiled water and sterile gauze, blotting gently dry to remove all moisture. Air is the key.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Giving Blood: The Red Cross has suggested that you do not give blood for 4 months.

MRI Scans: Medical Micropigmentation can show up as an artefact on the scan. Some patients may experience a tingling sensation. Please notify the radiologist.

Laser: Laser hair removal should be undertaken BEFORE a medical micropigmentation procedure is carried out as it could cause the area to turn black.

For those with scars stemming from hair transplants, such as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) methods, Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a more tailored approach.
